"When I see an adult on a bicycle, I no longer despair for the human race" - H.G. Wells
Why cycling?
Why choose cycling as opposed to
running, football, squash, golf or any other sport?
Cycling is one of the few sports or recreations that
has something for everyone.
For the recreational cyclist there is the CTC the Cyclists Touring Club
and Audax with whom you can visit places from your corner shop to the
four corners of the globe if you wish.
For the competitive person, cycling has events that will keep you occupied
for the full 12 months of the year depending upon your wants, desires
and aspirations, with summer being the greater opportunity with the widest
range of events.
Summer: time trials, road races, and track
events, Audax.
Autumn: roller racing, indoor track events,
hill climbs.
Winter: cyclo cross, mountain biking.
Spring: End of the cyclo cross season and the
start of the time trial season and road racing season.
These events can range in distance from a 400 metre sprint event on the
track or hill climb or roller race to cyclo cross and mountain biking
events to time trials from 5, 10, 25, 100 miles and 12 and 24 hour distance
events. To road racing such as the Mayday Criteriums with each lap being
only 1 km to multiday stage races such as the Milk race and the Tour de
France for professionals to Audax events such as the Paris – Brest
– Paris a distance of 750 miles to be completed in 90 hours. |
