Sunday 8th May saw Dean Clarke and Mark Elmy travel to Colchester for
the Colchester Rovers 50 – the first in our region this year held
upon a new and previously unridden by either rider 3 lap course between
Horsley Cross on the A120, Little Clackton at the end of the A133, returning
via Weeley and Tendring, the first 2 laps being of 18 miles each and
the last lap having a short cut to omit Little Clacton making it only
14 miles to give a total of 50.
Travelling through villages with speed calming measures, pot holes,
rough surfaces, hills and valleys to give this course a true ‘Sporting
Course’ label, the event counting toward the 2005 Sporting courses
or SPOCO competition. To add to the geographical challenges was a cold
north westerly wind which appeared to be in the riders face irrespective
of the direction faced. Luckily the rain held off until after the finish
which hurried packing of bikes into cars.
This complicated course, which contrary to usual courses had a start
difficult to find which resulted on one rider finding the course late
and the other not finding the start. Yet in spite of the challenging
conditions and course Mark Elmy would have beaten his personal best
by 2 minutes but due to prior difficulties was late to the start and
suffered a 3 minute penalty but leaves much hope for further improvement
upon other courses at this distance later in the year finally recording
2.21.47 missing by over a minute. Clarke was unable to find the start!
The event was won by Glan Taylor of API Resprays with 1.58.37. Second
was Paul Smith of Shaftsbury CC with 1.57.10 and third was Tristan Devine
of Elite CC with 1.59.57
Tuesday 3rd May
14 competitors greet the timekeeper
at the start of the 4th of 13 weekly Tuesday evening Godric 10 mile
time trials, starting at Earsham to Redenhall roundabout and back along
the A143 course.
Following a day of a stiff breeze from the south west, the wind dropped
slightly but still gave a resolute resistance to making progress in
an outward, westerly direction .
The fastest Godric on the night was
again Tim Bonnett with 23.12 a further improvement of 24 seconds from
the previous week and 57 seconds improvement upon the series start.
Second this week was Mark Elmy with
24.26 an improvement of 79 seconds over his last ride 2 weeks ago.
Third was Graham Pigg with 25.02, an improvement of 25 seconds over
his previous ride two weeks ago.
Fourth Godric was Terry Power with 25.07 an improvement of 10 seconds
over his previous weeks time and a cumulative improvement of 23 seconds
since his first Tuesday 3 weeks ago.
Gavin Cole was fifth with 25.29 an improvement of 41 seconds over his
last Tuesday ride.
Paul Barwood came sixth with 27.13 a slowing of 26 seconds over his
last weeks time but still better than his first outing by 24 seconds.
Jim Caplin found seventh place hard work with 30.37 a slowing of 74
seconds over his best Tuesday time last week
John Vidler also found progress difficult to return to the time keeper
31.40 later. A slowing of 45 seconds from his previous outing
Matt Donaldson of Plomesgate CC was
fastest overall on the night with 23.07. an improvement of 22 seconds
from 2 weeks ago after puncturing last week.
John Dupen of Somerset Road Club recorded 24.17 an improvement of 28
seconds upon last week
Mark Ready of Diss CC recorded 24.29 an improvement of 28 seconds over
two weeks ago.
Ray Ross of Comrades CC recorded 26.04, a slowing of 35 seconds over
last week.
Mike Rainton of VC Baracchi recorded 26.30, an improvement of 52 seconds
over last week.
Gavin Barker of VC Norwich recorded 26.43 an improvement of 34 seconds
over last week.
Come And Try: All Godric ‘Club’
events are ‘Come and Try’. Club events are defined as not
‘Open’, i.e. they are predominantly for club members and
other club members are welcome. They cost only £1 for club members
and work as a gentle gradual introduction to cycling for those wishing
to try. Restrictions do apply in so far as riders must be 12 Years or
more and those under 18 must have a parental consent form completed
by a parent and must wear a cycle helmet. Full details are available
from the Godric Web site WWW.GodricCyclingClub.co.uk/CAT
Monday 2nd May
May Day 2005 was greeted with a warm
damp drizzly and humid morning at Wortwell for the start of the VC Baracchi
10 mile time trial. The course starting at Wortwell turned at Bungay’s
‘chicken roundabout’ to return to finish just before the
Homersfield junction at Wortwell. The conditions saw many riders stay
in bed whilst others got to the course to decide not to ride whilst
yet more riders forwent a warm up to start their ride in a still cold
state which reflected upon early times. Later riders had the benefit
of a warm up in the sun with the rain ceasing upon a dry course. This
resulted in Godric rider Pat Ellis recording 23.50 and Mike Hudspith
with 24.58.
Sunday 1st May
Dean Clarke travelled to the A1 at
Tempsford to ride the Norlond Combine 30 mile time trial starting at
Tempsford, heading south with a head wind to the end of the A1 where
the route turned west to the turn before retracing their route to the
finish.
Dean Clarke recorded 1.12.07, averaging 25 mph over the whole distance.
Tuesday 26th April
A cool cross wind from the south cross
the A143 for the weekly Godric 10 mile time trial. Being a cross wind,
which is reputedly 60% in front of the rider in each direction –
so wind tunnels prove saw some impressive times for the condirions.
Tim Bonnett was first Godric and overall winner with 23.36 improving
his previous weeks time by 2 seconds. Terry Power was second with 25.17,
improving by 13 seconds. Third was Paul Barwood with 26.47, 33 seconds
faster than the previous week. Forth was Jim Caplin with 29.23 an improvement
of 26 seconds upon the previous week. Fifth was Ron Shoobridge with
30.05, his first outing upon a Tuesday evening. Final Godric was John
Vidler with 30.55, 11 seconds down upon the previous.
Other riders were Gavin Barker from VC Norwich with 27.17, 12 seconds
down upon previous. John Swanbury made a large improvement of 47 seconds
to give him 25.37. John Dupen of Somerset Road Club 23.49, an improvement
of 20 seconds. Mike Rainton of VC Baracchi 27.22, another improvement
of 29 seconds. Ray Ross of Comrades CC 26.39, an improvement of 61 seconds.
Chris and son Phil Nudds rode their tandem to record 21.24
Sunday 24th April
3 Godrics commence the East Anglian
CC 25 mile Time Trial on the A11 course. Starting at Spooner Row to
ride the 3 miles East to A11/B1135 Mulbarton junction roundabouts where
the direction is reversed to ride the 14 miles south to the new Larling
junction where the direction is again reversed to travel East again
for another 8 miles to the finish. The morning started cool and with
a rising north easterly wind saw initial speeds to the first turn at
only just over 20 mile per hour. However the second 14 mile leg west
bound to Larling saw most riders touching if not exceeding 30 mph in
the strong north easterly wind. This left a very difficult final stretch
east bound back to Attlebourgh where most riders saw their impressive
times for the distance gradually diminish into the head wind.
However in spite of the conditions some impressive times were recorded.
Not least of all was Mark Elmy who recorded a personal best at the distance
of 64.18 beating his previous personal best by 90 seconds. Mike Hudspith,
riding a 98 inch fixed wheel recorded an impressive 1.02.21 most impressive
for being upon such a large fixed wheel, condusive to the fast middle
section with the wind but extremely difficult against the wind. Lastly
was Pat Ellis who recorded 59.52.
The event was won by Paul Ashby of team API Metrow with 52.52. Second
was Jon Surtees of LUK Racing with 55.06. Third was Nick Douse of Team
API-Metrow with 56.03 and fourth was Mark Solley of Anglia Velo with
56.25. Fastest Lady was Tracy Prewer of VC Baracchi with 1.13.34. The
team prize was won by Anglia Velo with Mark Solley recording 56.25,
Geoff Bateman 57.39 and Nick Dunkley 1.02.33 giving a total of 2.56.57.
Tuesady 19th April
First 10 mile Time Trial on the A143
Earsham to Redenhall and return course saw even faster times recorded
in spite of the 10mph North Easterly wind which hampered riders in both
directions but were hampered more for the return leg. In spite of the
weather forecast the evening saw 18 competitors take part – now
they’ve returned from their training session in Italy. This series
of Time Trials decide the Godrics Silverleaf Trophy, presented annually
to the points winner from the Club at the Club’s dinner and presentation
evening in February. The current leader being Tim Bonnett who having
won last week proceeded to head the Godrics times this week, taking
31 seconds off last weeks time with 23.38.
Second this week was Graham Pigg, with 25.27. Grahams first outing this
year and threatening that theres more to come. Third was Terry Power
with 25.30, having done his preseason training in Italy on pasta, cakes
and ice cream. Mark Elmy was forth with 25.45, obviously having not
fully recovered from last weekends 300K Audax. Fifth was Gavin Cole
with 26.10, his first time outing since riding the Loddon circuit nearly
a month ago. Another sufferer was Paul Barwood who was 31 seconds down
on last week with 27.20. Another Italian returnee, showing all the signs
of his training upon pasta and ice cream was Jim Caplin who recorded
29.49. John Vidler was eighth with 30.44, another sufferer from the
conditions being almost a minute down upon last week’s performance.
Other riders included John Dupen of Somerset CC who recorded 24.09,
25 seconds down on last weeks performance. Ray Ross of Comrades CC recorded
27.40, again 37 seconds down upon the previous week. John Swanbury of
VC Baracchi was also 23 seconds down with 26.24. Other riders were Peter
Laws of East Anglian CC with 28.25, Gavin Baker of Norwich ABC with
27.05, Mark Ready of Diss CC with 24.16, Matt Donaldson of Plomesgate
CC with 23.31, Tom Worvill of Gt. Yarmouth CC with 23.12 and Mike Rainton
of VC Baracchi with 27.51. And showing everyone how it should be done
was our own East Anglian World Record Holder Zak Carr of Team Clean
who returned 20.38 with his new tandem partner Vin Haines also of Team
Clean.
Sunday 17th April 2005
On a mild Tuesday evening with very
little wind, 7 competitors took the starter, the remaining competitors
being over in Italy for some early season training.
The result being some swift times being recorded. John Dupen of Somerset
road Club won the event with 23.44, an improvement upon his previous
weekends ride on the A14. Shawn Aldous and Tim Bonnett of Godric CC
both recorded 24.09. A good opening gambit and a target for their next
ride which will prove hard to beat. Other riders’ times were Paul
Barwood of Godric CC 26.49, Ray Ross of Comrades CC 27.03 and John Vidler
of Godric CC 29.53.
Saturday saw the next step of the
24 hour build up and Mark Elmy was greeted to a very foggy start at
5.45 when he left his house for Bungay Market Place to collect his first
‘proof’ for the start of his monthly 24 hour build up test.
This month a distance of 300 kilometres or 180 miles. The route took
in Halesworth, Harleston, Diss, Thetford, Kings Lynn, Hunstanton, Cromer,
North Walsham, Great Yarmouth, Lowestoft, Beccles and Gillingham before
returning back to Bungay Market Place for his last proof. It was so
foggy a morning that it wasn’t until almost to Thetford before
the sun started to burn through the fog and an outline shadow could
be seen and way past Thetford before the fog was finally left behind,
over 5 hours into the trip. It was because of the cold, damp and foggy
start that hampered early progress with the requirement of full winter
clothing. Which then hampered later progress in the afternoon when temperatures
started to rise. But was welcome again when temperatures again receded
toward evening. But by now was closer to home, which always raises spirits
and lifts the tempo. To return home almost 14 hours after leaving Bungay.
A disappointing average speed but in light of the conditions, clothing
required, mudguards, lights and lack of a companion then next month
with rising temperatures and the hope of a partner or two a higher average
speed can be achieved.
Sunday 4th April 2005
On a warm Saturdays afternoon, seven
riders took to the start of the seasons first Godric handicap 25 of
the season. In a warm gentle wind of almost 17 degrees but gusting across
the course, making riding more difficult, some impressive times were
recorded.
Won by Clive Ling of Diss CC in 59.42, pushing a big 99” fixed
wheel gear.
Chris Nudds CC Breckland 1.00.43
Paul Lynch East Anglians CC 1.04.54
Steve Peck NewWorld CC1.05.15
Tim Bonnett Godric CC 1.05.39
Dean Notley Godric CC 1.08.55
Noticeable absentees were Dean Clarke
and Mark Elmy who took advantage of hoped for early season form to ride
on the E2/10 course starting at Six Mile Bottom and turning at Four
Went Ways on the fast A11. However this rolling course with its many
undulations was also subject to a strong cross wind and in the diminishing
tempratures of the early evening start saw disappoining times returned.
Dean clarke continued his early season dominance to complete the 10
miles in 23.08 and Mark elmy returned to the finisher in 25.09. Both
times were the fastest times either have seen from such early season
rides in recent years.
Sunday 27th March
On a cold Good Friday morning, the
first 10 mile time trial of the spring season saw 6 Godrics entered
in the Great Yarmouth CC organised event on the A143 starting at Wortwell,
to turn at ‘Chicken’ Roundabout to finish back at Wortwell.
With most complaining of a more difficult return leg and others complaining
of the cold in both directions, with temperatures peaking at 10 degrees
and cooling again before the end.
Dean Clarke (31) 23.13
Patric Ellis (56) 23.55
Paul Barwood (58) 28.20
Ron Sutton (29) 29.57
John Cooper (44) 30.44
Jim Caplin (53) 31.26
The event was won by Ian Cammish of
Sonic Cycles with 21.38
Dean Clarke was able to win an unusually awarded prize of being the
fastest Vet on standard with a net time of 17.13 after his ‘handicap’
was deducted from his actual time. Overall the status quo was maintained
with Dean Clarke being the fastest Godric on the day with Pat Ellis
42 seconds behind and a large gap before the next Godric was recorded
to finish. Even from this early event we can see who is intending upon
taking away a large stash of trophies again at the Presentation Evening.
However that is still many months away and the cycling season still
has over 6 months to run during which time much can change and probably
will. Next Saturday (2nd April) will see Godric members riding the ECCA
10 mile time trial upon the fast A14 dual carriageway. For the uninitiated
the dual carriageway should see even faster times than today due to
the riders being separated from oncoming traffic by a minimum of 2 lanes
of carriageway.
The attached photo shows Dean Clarke
upon the return leg , having just gone under the bridge to the common,
approaching Earsham, signalling to the camera that “He’s
on a ‘flyer!’”.
Sunday 21st March 2005
Medium Gear
Sunday 13th March saw a team of three Godrics riding the Diss ‘Medium
Gear’ event held at Bressingham on the A1066 to Thetford road.
With a strong westerly wind slowing outbound speeds to below 20 mph
in many cases but a fast return was inevitable seeing 30 mph on the
descents. This causing many riders to be pleased that they rode gears
with a freewheel as opposed to those who traditionally ride a fixed
wheel and suffered upon the return stretch with legs a blur trying to
keep up with the flying pedals.
To put this into context a ‘medium gear’ event limits gearing
to 72 inches or 18 feet, 10 and a quarter inches per pedal revolution
which translates to a 52 tooth chainwheel and a 19 tooth rear sprocket.
Upon which to do 25 mph needs a cadence of 118 RPM and therefore 30
mph becomes a blur and a soft seat gets much appreciation, not least
of all due to the rough road surface of the A1066.
The results were a little disappointing, having hoped for a team win
but having suffered in the wind the Godric team were beaten into third
team place by the winners API and narrowly into second place Diss CC
leaving Godric CC in third place by 13 seconds.
Individually the Godric team were credited with Dean Clarke recorded
1.6.23, Mike Hudspith 1.9.38 and Mark Elmy 1.10.43. The event was won
by Glen Taylor of team API in 1.00.37. This was one of Glens many medium
gear victories having won the series of medium gear events last year.
Audax
A week later on Saturday 19th March two Godric riders took part in the
200 Km (120 miles) Audax event starting from John Innes Institute at
Colney near Norwich. The event was the first in a schedule of events
in the lead up to the 24 hour time trial in July.
On a chilly, mere 8 degrees Celsius yet promising misty morning which
was just waiting for the sun to break through. Due to the mist the wind
was very light from the south east, making the first quarter more difficult
but having been ridden in a bunch the workload was shared. It also helped
those riders who wanted to break clear rather than partake of the cafes
with a tail wind through the middle two quarters of the route and leaving
a head wind for the final quarter.
The route took in Bracon Ash, Wreningham, Tacolneston, Bunwell, Starston
and Harleston before Halesworth where many riders stopped at the café
for refreshments whilst others pressed to gain an early lead. Upon leaving
Halesworth the route returned to the John Innes Institute via Wisset,
Rumburgh, Homersfield and Hempnall to mark the end of the first half
of the ride.
The second half of the ride took riders out to Hempton near Fakenham
via Easton, Ringland Hills and Lyng, before journeying between many
villages to reach the garden centre at Hempton. This then left a mere
30 miles to cover to the end of the ride and whilst many of the delights
of the garden centre café proved too good to resist for many
others, yet more riders pressed on back through Tittleshall, Dereham
and Colton.
The first to return to the HQ was Godrics Mark Elmy determined to make
up for the previous weeks result with an emphatic clear first. This
ride was the next step after Februarys 150 km ride from Norwich City
College with a 300 km ride planned for April.
Whilst the philosophy of Audax is more in line of a number of rides
between café stops to refill tired muscles of their spent energy
to prove that the distance can be covered merely within a few confines
of time, official timings are not given. However Mark avoided delaying
his finish unnecessarily to complete the course in 7 hours and 35 minutes.
This averages out at a mere 16 mph, over some roads of rough terrain
and with a heavy touring cycle equipped with mudguards, lights and tools
required should anything fail. In comparison when riding the 24 hour
time trial, a lightweight cycle stripped to its minimum with lightweight
components and an intended average of 18 mph. is the target Therefore
in comparison with the achievement and the target performance a satisfactory
performance can be recorded. With Stuart Main completing the course
45 minutes later having succumbed to the delights of the cafes.
Sunday 20th March
Ditchingham – Stockton – Loddon Circuit
A cold, misty, drizzled Sunday morning
saw 7 hardy souls compete over this twelve and a half mile circuit.
With a hardy Stuart Main riding again in his first time trial after
a winters cyclo cross and for the second day on the trot after the previous
days 200 Km / 120 mile Audax ride.
The event was won by Dean Clarke in 30.40 – almost averaging 25
mph over this difficult and sometime treacherous course. Corners between
Loddon and Ditchingham, some corners having loose gravel and others
being almost smooth making cornering dangerous on the wet roads, Dean
stating that he slowed down for some of the corners to remain safe.
Other times recorded were:
Tim Bonnett Godric CC 33.50
Gavin Cole Godric CC 35.14
David Root of Diss and District CC 34.42
Stuart Main Godric 35.50
Dean Notley Godric CC 37.04
David Francis Godric CC 39.00
Sunday 28th November Another successful year!
Godric Veterans Win East District
Team Prizes
At the recent East Anglian Group of
the Veterans Time Trial Association Presentations Evening three members
of the Godric Cycling Club were able to collect Gold medals for their
past seasons victories.
The gold medals were presented to
Godric members Dean Clarke, Jim Caplin and Ron Shoobridge for their
respective performances firstly in the Group Championship competition
being held over distances of 10, 25, 50 and 100 miles. The medal was
awarded for the attainment of the greatest average speed.
A second gold medal was also given
to the same team in the Three Distance Competition held over 25, 50
& 100 miles. In this competition they again attained the greatest
average speed in excess of their standards
In the VTTA East Anglian Group BAR
(Best All Rounder) competition Dean Clarke was able to attain a 5th
position overall at his first attempt and 34th Nationally in the VTTA
BAR competition.
In the VTTA National Three Distance
Competition held over 25, 50 & 100 miles Jim Caplin attained a 91st
position, Dean Clarke 135th and Ron Shoobridge 144th.
It should be stressed that the VTTA
awards are calculated by giving the elder competitors a greater allowance
than their younger counterparts but to join the VTTA a minimum age of
40 years must be attained which makes the achievements of Dean Clarke
the more remarkable, this being his first year of joining the VTTA.
The other members of the team having been members of the VTTA for a
far longer period of time.
These positions are attained upon
speed ahead of pre determined 'standards' dependant upon age whereas
in the National Open BBAR Competition, held over 50, 100 and 12 Hour
distances, where speed alone is the primary concern and not age then
Dean was able to attain a 37th position, . Patric Ellis came 74th and
Mike Hudspith 105th in the same competition.
Whilst in the 2 distance BAR Mark Elmy attained a 261st position, Jim
Caplin 319th and Ron Shoobridge 338th.
On top of these highly creditable
places, The Godric Cycling Club has had much to feel proud of this year.
These include the breaking of the Team 100 mile record by Patric Ellis,
Mike Hudspith and Mark Elmy which had stood unbroken for the past 40
years and Dean Clarke broke his own solo club 100 mile record.
Following on from this years epic
events, many members have been given much enthusiasm to begin planning
their next years season already .. Before Christmas! These plans include
the intention to take part in the National 24 Hour Time Trial, held
by the Mersey Road Club and will take place on the 23rd and 24th July
2005. If three members can complete the time then a new team record
will be set because to date three members have never completed the time!
There is also the hope by some that a new 24 hour solo record will be
set .. currently standing at almost 430 miles, set in 1999 by John Pugh
who will form the backbone of the 24 Hour Team. This has encouraged
many members to start training early for next season which will hopefully
pay dividends in the New Years Day 10 mile Time Trial to be held on
the A11. In the hope to overturn last years second place by only 10
seconds and return with the winning Team prize to start the new year
off in a manner which is hoped will continue until July at least.
Sunday 24th October saw this years Hill Climb held at Stoke Holy Cross
near Norwich.
A long (0.9 of a mile!) hill but not
as steep as our usual 'Dove hill' at Homersfield.
This years event saw entries from
not only Godric riders but also riders from many other clubs too being
a 'Come and Try' event open to anyone saw a longer list of competitors.
Photos will appear in the gallery soon.
